At the crossroads between ancestral sacredness and technological innovation, a new lineage of spiritual practitioners emerges: cybershamans. For them, computers, digital networks, and interactive tools are not just utilitarian devices—they are portals to other realities. Just as traditional shamans used drums, dance, or entheogenic plants to travel between worlds, cybershamans use computer technologies as catalysts for altered states of consciousness.
Cybershamanism is not a denial of the past, but a reformulation of the shaman archetype for the information age. It is a living, adaptable, and visionary spirituality that recognizes cyberspace as a new territory of the sacred—an initiatory space where the invisible is accessed through the visible, where bits and bytes dance to the rhythm of the soul.
Technology as a spiritual vehicle:
In the world of cybershamanism, computers cease to be inert machines and become living environments. They are considered a “space”, an alternative realm — not just virtual, but spiritual. This digital space, which we could call cyberspace, is understood as a plane that exists beyond the physical, and that can be visited, experienced and inhabited on a journey.
Some cybershamans believe that there is a form of spiritual energy that flows through circuits and networks, something that vibrates beyond electronic logic — a kind of digital soul or invisible informational field. Others go further, reporting interactions with digital entities or electronic spirits that would inhabit this space and guide them in rituals or discoveries.
Rituals in cyberspace:
Unlike technoshamanism — where ancient rituals are adapted to technology — cybershamanism creates new rituals that are natively digital. These rituals do not occur only with the help of the computer: they occur within cyberspace itself. Fractal videos, binaural beats, AI-generated interfaces, or augmented reality experiences are becoming tools for spiritual induction.
A testimony from a cybershaman illustrates this experience well:
"I began my ritual by watching a fractal video on my desktop... I lost track of time. At one point, I felt the screen approaching, as if I were immersing myself in a deep, warm bath. From that moment on, I knew I had crossed over: I was inside cyberspace, traveling all night, disconnected from earthly senses but in touch with something new, subtle, and expanded."
These states of immersion are often accompanied by changes in sensory perception, subtle bodily symptoms, or even sensations of presence in another dimension—similar to classic shamanic journeys, but mediated by digital technologies.
Cyberspace as an etheric plane:
For many cybershamans, cyberspace is not just a technological creation, but a modern equivalent of the astral plane. It has an “etheric counterpart” with which the human spirit can interact. In this sense, the connections that are created between individuals through the Internet can be more than simple communication: they are non-local connections, spirit to spirit, through a global information field, which some associate with the esoteric concept of Akasha. The experience is sometimes catalyzed by fractal art. Many begin their journeys by visiting websites with fractal images or using software that generates psychedelic visual patterns in real time. For these practitioners, the fractal is not just aesthetic — it is symbolic of the very structure of reality: infinite, self-replicating, a mirror of the cosmos and the unconscious.
The fusion of technology and transcendence:
Cybershamanism proposes a bold vision: technology does not separate the human from the spiritual — it brings them closer together. Through it, new languages of transcendence emerge, new maps of the soul, and new forms of communication with non-ordinary realities. Contrary to the technocratic vision that sees digital systems as tools of control and alienation, cybershamanism recovers the enchantment of the world — now extended to the digital realm.
Thus, the screen becomes a magic mirror; the code, a spell; the interface, an altar.
